tonight will be the last night of the sixth month in the Chinese Calendar.
tomorrow is the first day of the Seventh Month (Ghost Month).
it is also known as the "Hungry Ghost Festival" (15th day of the 7th month)......
just now i went downstairs with my papa & korkor to burn incense (joss) paper, joss sticks and prayed.
i saw a few others doing that downstairs too.
my dad told me that the one lady who was doing it alone, did a mistake. "she's supposed to use joss sticks with green 'leg' (青脚香) as an offering to the deceased and not the red ones which is usually used as an offering to heaven/god/devas etc."
i didnt know about that either.
i learnt something today. =]
tonight when the clock strikes Twelve.....
the Hell Gate opens........
and the ghosts and spirits, including deceased ancestors,
come out from the lower realm to visit the living.
people out there.
do keep this in mind for this whole month.
- do not step onto any remains of the burnt incense (joss) paper. [if you accidentally step on some small pieces all around the floor, no harm to whisper 'sorry' tho].
- try to avoid crossing in between the joss sticks and candles etc, but if you really have to, whisper 'excuse me' or 'sorry'. don't be rude.
- try not to wear black if possible as it may allow 'them' to get close to you.
- do not bring along or wear accessories with bells as it will attract 'them'.
- never leave your washed clothes outside to dry at night, as those 'new deceased' might be blown into your clothes and could not come out, and one may end up being unfortunate wearing it.
- bring in all your clothes (hanging out to dry) before evening (5pm).
- close up your umbrella at your doorstep before entering your house. never open up an umbrella inside your house.
- try not to be out til as late as midnight.
- do not go to the seaside at night.
- never let anyone tap on your shoulder.
- try not to whistle or scream.
hmmmm.... goosebumps?
it's interesting tho.
some think it's just being superstitious. some think it's true.
well, believe it or not, it's up to you.
all i can say is,
“不听老人言,吃亏在眼前”
["If the old dog barks, he gives counsel"/"ignoring elderly's advices, may result in suffer of loss"]
it's always better to be safe than sorry.
take care, people.
